After ingesting a poisonous plant, about 40 cows died this morning at a dairy farm on the 6200 block of Pacheco Pass Highway.

About 11 a.m. Thursday, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call of dozens of dead cows, Sheriff’s Sgt. Rick Sung said. Deputies then handed the investigation over to county animal control and CalFire.

The South Santa Clara County Fire District responded to the unpleasant scene and concluded that the culprit was oleander, one of the most poisonous, commonly-grown garden plants that can often be seen growing in large bushes along highways.

CalFire Battalion Chief Jim Crawford said he did not know where the animals got into the oleander.

The landowner will be responsible for disposing of the cattle, Crawford said.
