Why is getting the proper flex of a golf shaft so important?
I’ll give you a way to feel the difference between the right or
wrong flex. The right flex must fit your club head speed or you
won’t get all the benefit that is built into your club. This should
help you understand why.
Why is getting the proper flex of a golf shaft so important? I’ll give you a way to feel the difference between the right or wrong flex. The right flex must fit your club head speed or you won’t get all the benefit that is built into your club. This should help you understand why.

You will need three golf balls for this demonstration. I suggest you go outside to do this. Take the first ball and throw it. While you are doing this pay attention how as you rare back your wrist bends and your palm faces up on the way back and as your arm move forward your wrist unbends as you releases the ball and now your palm faces down. That would be the correct flex in a shaft for you. Your arm, wrist and shoulder working together.

Now take the next ball, but as you throw it keep your hand straight and don’t let your wrist bend at all. From your elbow to your fingertips make it one piece. The only way this works is by spinning your shoulders, a lot of extra work. That is a shaft that is too stiff.

Now take the last ball and let your hand and wrist feel as limp as the proverbial wet noodle. You can throw it but you will not have any control as to where it goes. This is a shaft that is too flexible.

I hope this helps you to understand why it is important to be fit properly when you are buying new golf equipment. There is no charge for a fitting so don’t buy clubs without one. Play well.
