In an effort to support students in scholarships and arts programs through fundraising, a group of local community members is holding an evening of dining and auctions.
The sixth annual Dinner and Auction, organized by the Aromas-San Juan Bautista Community Schools Foundation, will be held Saturday, March 8. Tickets must be purchased by March 1.
Over the past five years the foundation has awarded more than $33,000 in scholarships. This year, the group is expanding its support of local schools by holding an additional live auction of student artwork. Money from the art auction will help support arts programs in the Aromas-San Juan Unified School District – programs threatened by cutbacks in arts funding and the state budget deficit, said ASJUSD Superintendent Jackie Munoz.
“We’re constantly trying to keep arts programs in our schools,” Munoz said. “With reductions in funding, it makes it more difficult. In most districts, arts are the first thing to go.”
Organizers are hoping for more than 150 people to attend. The event is open to the public.
Dinner will be a tri-tip barbecue which starts at 5 p.m. with a no-host social hour at the San Juan VFW Hall, 58 Monterey Street.
Tickets are $25 per person or $300 for a table of six. They can be purchased at Galeria Tonantzin, 115 Third Street in San Juan, or by calling the ASJUSD office at 623-4500, ext. 902.
