Our first Red Phone caller of the week called with a very important question that the Crimson Crusader was hard-pressed to answer. Our caller said she was having trouble disposing of her old cell phone and several local companies, including a cell phone service provider, would not accept the phone.

Well, the Crimson Crusader always loves a challenge. Our hero placed a call to Nikki Tuft, office manager at Western Recycling in Morgan Hill, to find out what could be done. Tuft said Western Recycling would be in Hollister from 9am to 4pm Jan. 6 at the Old Fremont School collecting and recycling used electronics, from computers to cell phones. The event is designed to benefit local organizations, Tuft said. The rest of the year, Tuft said, people can also take their old cell phones to the John Smith Landfill in Hollister on John Smith Road to dispose of them.

Improper Parking

Our next Red Phone call came from a downtown business owner complaining about an SUV parked illegally in a red zone along San Benito Street near Sixth Street. Our caller said the illegally parked vehicle was blocking visibility for those turning from Sixth Street onto San Benito Street and from those motorists trying to turn from San Benito Street onto Sixth Street.

The Crimson Crusader walked over to the spot in question and asked two women working in the office near the vehicle in question to kindly ask the car’s owner to move it to a legal parking spot not blocking other motorists’ visibility. The women said they would oblige the Crusader’s request.

Thinking the problem was solved, the Crimson Crusader was surprised when another caller phoned the Red Phone on Tuesday with the same complaint. So this time, the Crimson Crusader went back and talked to the owner directly. The owner said he had received a ticket from local police for illegally parking his car and would move it shortly. So fret not, dear caller, the vehicle will be moved, leaving you with an unobstructed view.

Crusader’s Vacation

Our final Red Phone matter of the week concerns the Crimson Crusader. Our hero will be taking some time off during the Christmas season to dig for buried treasure at Oak Island in Canada. Although the Crimson Crusader will not be publishing a column or answering questions and complaints during the week of Dec. 25 to Jan. 1, our hero encourages locals to call in. All questions will be answered promptly upon the Crimson Crusader’s return from Canada on Jan. 3, regardless of whether buried loot is unearthed.
