Organizers of the annual Hollister Downtown Association Street Festival hope to build on the tradition of the event while adding more displays and demonstrations.

The July 17 event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on San Benito Street, will feature live music all day, a car show, live performances at the Veterans Memorial Building plaza and children’s activities.

A recent e-mail from HDA noted that the “ambitious goals” for this year’s event include registering 200 cars for the car show – up from the approximately 60 vehicles that entered last year – and the introduction, or reintroduction, of other elements.

Plans include bringing back specialty car displays, such as race cars and emergency vehicles from local police, fire and Red Cross agencies. Pedal car and model car displays are in the works and new cars may be showcased as well.

The HDA hopes to partner with the Hollister Youth Alliance and the YMCA to provide additional children’s activities at the corner of Fourth and San Benito streets and organizers want to bring back auto-related vendor booths to augment the sales, informational and food booths that line the downtown thoroughfare during the annual event.

More portable restrooms and hand-washing stations will be added and additional live entertainment and demonstrations are scheduled.

The sponsorship deadline was May 7, but the HDA is still accepting entries for the car displays and seeking gifts for goodie bags, raffle gifts and vendors. Volunteers are also sought for the event.
