Miller, of Hollister, passed away at his home after a long
journey with pancreatic cancer. He was 67.
Dr. Roy Richard “Dick” Miller, of Hollister, passed away at his home after a long journey with pancreatic cancer. He was 67.
He is preceded in death by his parents Roy A. and Mary E. (Smith) Miller. He is survived by his wife of 23 years Cindy and three daughters and their families: Elisa and Bill Partlow of Cumberland, Md.; Betsey and Mike Hurtado and their son Trent, grandpa’s pride, of Hollister, and Kirste and Scott Webb of Maryville, Tenn.
A native of South Vienna, Ohio, Dick graduated from Springfield’s Northeastern High School in 1954. He received his B.S. in Chemistry from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1958 and his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1962 from the University of Chicago. He worked for American Cyanamid, Conn.; Hercules ABL, Rocket Center, W.V.; Herecules, Salt Lake City; and United Technologies/Pratt & Whitney Chemical Systems Division, San Jose. After retirement, Dick consulted for Aerojet, Sacramento. He authored numerous technical papers on chemical propellants and propulsion, and was a member of several technical institutes and societies, including the American Institute of Physics and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. In 1994 he received a Certificate of Recognition from the JANNAF Combustion Subcommittee for his contributions to Combustion Technology.
Dick’s primary hobby was airplanes, full-scale and radio-controlled models. He was one of the founding members of the Cumberland Aircraft Modelers’ Society. He obtained his private pilot’s license in 1973 and was a member of the Cumberland Soaring Club.
A memorial service will be held Monday, March 15, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home in Hollister.
A reception will follow the services at the family home.
