New community center program draws kids

The inaugural night of the Drop Zone, a new community center for kids ages 11 to 14, opened with a handful of kid visitors and lots of volunteers.

Started by members of the 2008 Leadership San Benito Class, the Drop Zone opened June 19 at the Hollister Community Center, 300 West St. The Thursday night event runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and offers free food and fun for kids.

The first night included plenty of pizza, board games and a game of keepaway. The cool thing about the program is kids have a say in what they do and at the end of each evening they can give input about what activities worked and what they’d like to do in the future. Upcoming activities will include skits for kids who enjoy acting and art programs with local artists.

The Drop Zone is open every Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Hollister Community Center, 300 West St.
