San Benito High School students Alanah Martinez, Ian Sills, Evan Rosales and Faith Hernandez attended and participated in the Student Advisory Board on Legislation in Education Jan. 14-16 at the State Capitol.

At SABLE, students identified and discussed specific problems in the state’s education system. For three days, they worked long hours, expanding on these issues and brainstorming solutions. On the last day, students incorporated the solutions that they had developed into a proposal and presented to the California Senate Education Committee.

In the past, results from SABLE have included altering statewide graduation requirements for high school students, and changes in curriculum. This is the only conference in the nation that allows students to directly voice their concerns to the Senate and Assembly Committees on Education.

Rotary scholarships

Hollister Rotary has opened its scholarship application period for local students with a deadline of March 31.

High school students in San Benito County are encouraged to apply for the Rotary Club of Hollister’s annual college scholarship program, according to an announcement.

“Each year, the Rotary raises funds to send future leaders to college,” it states. “We believe that our future is in our youth and value the investment to make our world a better place with educational boosts.”

Local scholarships

The San Benito High School Career Center recently released the Local Scholarships List to seniors.

“Each year, organizations and members from our community offer generous scholarships to students seeking financial assistance to further their education at a two-, four-year college/university or technical/trade school,” according to SBHS staff.

Application deadlines vary, but the bulk of them fall on March 8.

“As students await their acceptance letters from college, now is a good time to research and begin the scholarship application process,” according to SBHS staff.

Most scholarships use the Common Application, which requires three letters of recommendation, a student activity sheet, a personal statement, a current copy of the student’s high school transcript and additional essays.

All scholarships can be viewed on the SBHS Career Center website, which contains a complete list of all application requirements and deadlines. Many nationwide scholarships can also be found on Fastweb.com and Scholarships.com.
