Muro leaves retirement to become interim superintendent

Evelyn Muro is the new interim superintendent/principal for the single-school North County School District.

Muro will replace Howard Chase, who left the position at the end of last year after having been in the position for only two years. The only school in the district is Spring Grove, a kindergarten-eighth grade school located northeast of Hollister. It has an enrollment of 547.

Muro comes from a teaching background, though she has spent the largest portion of her years in education as the director of human resources for San Benito High School, from which she retired two years ago.

Since that time Muro has been active on the high school Board of Trustees.

Her career started at a community school in Hawaii and since then she’s taught all over, but the majority of her time has been spent at the high school.

Despite the fact that Muro hasn’t been in such a public administrative position previously, she said that during her time as director of HR she worked closely with the board and superintendent.

Muro cites her years of experience and her knowledge of school structure and the students as her strongest assets.

“There’s a lot of good going on out here and I want to support all of that. I’ll hopefully bring aspects of my experience at the high school here. This is just such a wonderful school, there are so many things to be proud of. I really want to help it excel and validate the workers.”

Though budgeting is 80 percent of the job and she hasn’t had prior experience with such a large budget she has worked with the high school board on their budgets and understands what is necessary for the position.

This is Muro’s first exposure to the North County School District, but she and the board members are excited over the possibilities.

“This school has a real sense of community. Everyone you talk to says the same thing. Because I knew the K-8 structure and knew some of the staff I think that only worked in my favor,” said Muro.

The board agreed. Of all the candidates that applied for the position board president Renee Faught said that Muro’s dedication to community education really stood out to the board.

“Even after she retired she served on the Board of Trustees because she wanted to serve, she wanted to keep up that involvement in education,” said Faught.

The board president said it was never an issue that Muro hadn’t served in a higher position than director of HR. She said it was her level of professionalism that really impressed them.

“We felt that she was qualified and had what it takes to get the job done. If she doesn’t know the answer, she’ll ask,” said Faught. “We really wanted a community member. Many of the parents probably already know her or are familiar with her through her local ties.”

Muro will serve as the interim superintendent throughout this school year. Trustees said that they are not pursuing anyone else at this time.
