San Benito residents hoping to stock up on local produce will soon get their chance, because the Hollister Downtown Association’s annual farmers market will be returning on May 16.

Last year’s produce included tomatoes, cauliflower, asparagus, strawberries, mushrooms and cut flowers, most of it from county farms, as well as fresh and cooked seafood.

Hollister Mayor Brad Pike has told the Free Lance that he’s a fan of the farmers market because the event draws people downtown, provides great food and gives him a chance to socialize.

“I wish it was longer and bigger,” Pike said. “It’s an opportunity for people to come downtown, an opportunity to meet each other and be able to shop for some produce from our community producers.”

According to market manager Charlene Van Rooy, one of the market’s main purposes is to draw people to downtown Hollister. If people come for the farm-fresh produce, they may be tempted to stay and explore downtown, she said.

The market will be open every Wednesday between 3pm and 7pm until September.
