The return of the Farmers Market hits the streets of downtown Hollister Wednesday and will continue through Sept. 24.

“It’s getting close,” said Barbara Bauer, Farmers Market committee chair. “We’re working hard to get everything in order.”

This is the local event’s second consecutive year of operation after a long layoff.

Bauer said 31 vendors will set up on East Street, one block off San Benito Street on Wednesdays from 3 to 7 p.m. That is an hour earlier than last year.

About 26 of the vendors will come every week, she said.

“The overall opinion of the market is that it was successful last year,” said Hollister Downtown Association Executive Director Liz Kresky.

Local rancher Joe Morris will sell hamburgers with chips and beverages, and Bauer plans to again have street entertainers moving among shoppers. She said a puppet act will entertain children, and the HDA is looking for other volunteers for entertainment.

“We’re looking for more people to come down and entertain,” Bauer said. “It’s a chance to get out there and promote themselves.”

All of the vendors belong to the Monterey Bay Certified Farmers Market Group, Bauer said. Most of them come from Hollister, Aromas, Watsonville or other cities in the area, she said.

The Monterey Bay Certified Farmers Market Group has a goal to promote farmers and agricultural interests in the Central Coast Region. They are the market’s largest corporate sponsor. The HDA also sponsors the weekly event.

Last year, the market ran through October, but the committee changed the end date because of cold weather and the earlier sunset, Bauer said.
