The 10th annual march and festival in San Jose honoring United Farm Workers Union founder Cesar Chavez is scheduled for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. beginning at Roosevelt Park, located at 19th and Santa Clara Streets, and ending at La Plaza de Cesar E. Chavez.

“This is important to many people including San Benito County residents,” said San Juan Bautista resident Irma Aceves-Valdez. “Cesar Chavez was a civil rights, Latino, farm worker, labor leader, an environmentalist and a consumer advocate.”

Because agriculture is San Benito County’s No. 1 industry, Valdez is encouraging local residents to attend the festivities, as she intends to do.

“Driving on the highways, watching farm workers, I realize the struggle continues,” she said.

Valdez said the movement Chavez began has helped hundreds of thousands of farm workers win many rights, which has affected hundreds if not thousands of San Benito County farm workers.

“One of the reasons for the march is to keep Cesar Chavez’s spirit alive and to continue fighting for rights that are well-deserved,” she said.

The festival will begin after the march at La Plaza de Cesar Chavez, where participants can share in a cultural feast of music, food and folkloric dancing. Children’s activities are planned and information booths will be set up. There is no admission fee.

Parking is limited for marchers and organizers suggest participants use the free parking near the plaza and the free shuttle service to the start of the march between 8 and 9 a.m. There will be no shuttle service once the march has started.
