Tres Pinos – The San Benito County Planning Commission tonight may take its final vote on the proposed Spur Hotel in Tres Pinos.

On June 6, the Planning Commission voted 3-2 to deny the hotel developer’s request for a zone change and commercial district review, blocking the project. The commissioners directed county planners to prepare formal justifications for denial, but they voted June 20 to delay a final vote.

Plans call for a 44-unit hotel, including a banquet room and a meeting room, near the intersection of Highway 25 and Southside Road. Many locals have said the hotel doesn’t belong in a residential neighborhood and is a threat to the rural community, but other citizens have spoken of potential benefits to the economy.

One reason for the delay was to allow continued discussions between developers and county staff. According to a report from County Planner Chuck Ortwein, developer John Eade has decided not to pursue a general plan amendment – as suggested by Dan DeVries and other planning commissioners – and is asking the commission to make a decision on the project as presented June 6.

The commission’s decision can be appealed to the Board of Supervisors. The meeting will begin at 6pm in the County Administration Building.
