An apartment fire displaced four families after the Thursday night blaze ripped through the Hillcrest road complex.

One unit in affordable housing complex destroyed completely
A fire authorities are calling suspicious at a Hillcrest Road apartment building Thursday night left four families displaced, while no one was injured.

The fire, a cause of which is not yet known, started about 9:45 p.m. at the affordable housing complex at 850 Hillcrest Road, said Fire Capt. Mike O’Connor.

“It’s suspicious,” said O’Connor, whose department is working with the Hollister Police Department on the investigation. “As soon as we have something that goes one way or another,” the public will know, he said.

O’Connor did not elaborate on what led authorities to suspect possible arson.

“We always look at all fires the same way and go from there,” he said.

The fire started in a first-floor unit and spread to three others, he said. O’Connor did not have a damage estimate.

The Monterey-San Benito Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross have provided lodging, food and clothing to the victims.
