Firefighters rescued a Hollister woman this afternoon from the car she had been driving after the vehicle left a wet Sunnyslope Road, rolled and crashed against an oak tree.

The crash occurred at about 12:15 p.m. today just past the Dry Creek bridge. The Chevrolet Impala the woman had been driving had slammed up against the tree and flipped onto its driver’s side.

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to rip the car’s roof and free the woman. Firefighters also used wood and metal posts to stabilize the car as they removed the victim.

The 51-year-old woman – whose family had not been immediately notified and therefore was not named – was conscious and speaking to firefighters and medical personnel as they helped her. Rescuers did not know the extent of her injuries at the crash scene.

An ambulance took the crash victim to the Fairview Road CalFire station, where she was to be taken by a helicopter to a hospital.

Hollister police Sgt. Ray Wood said the woman was westbound on Sunnyslope Road when she lost control of the car.

“Don’t know why she lost control,” Wood said.

The area where the crash took place was wet and muddy at the time.

Chuck Ramires, who has lived near the Dry Creek bridge for 30 years, said the crossing used to be more dangerous.

“There used to be more (crashes) before they put that bridge in,” Ramires said.

Ramires said the road was more narrow and the turn was sharper near the Dry Creek bridge before improvements were made. He recalled watching a motorcycle rider in a bad crash near a tree east of where today’s crash happened.

The woman was wearing a seat belt, police said, but the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
