When Ely and Beth Albalos discovered the CrossFit system of workouts, they thought they were already in good shape.

“We thought we were in the best shape of our lives,” Ely said. “But we did one workout and we ended up on the floor.”

The program uses what Ely called functional movement to teach people the proper way to do an exercise. When learning a new movement, clients use lightweight PVC pipe to practice the move and then add in weight after they know how to do it.

“Its scaleable for the most advanced or de-conditioned person and to kids,” Ely said.

In fact, some of their evening classes are geared towards children and they even incorporate some gymnastics moves into the mix with gymnastics rings, which Ely said the kids love.

“If we say we are going to teach them a dead lift, it sounds intimidating,” Ely said. “All they are learning to do is pick something up. Kids love being able to do something they see their parents doing.”

The couple started teaching the CrossFit program out of their garage to friends for free.

“It started with one person,” Ely said. “Then two, then three. It’s a lifestyle change and it’s really empowering to see people.”

They opened up their Shelton Drive gym three months ago. Unlike a regular gym, all of the workouts at CrossFit Hollister are led by a personal trainer and conducted in a group setting.

Ely and Beth are offering a special eight-week fitness challenge for $50 that is open to members and non-members. The challenge runs March 7 through May 2. The cost includes the fee for three workouts at Cross Fit Hollister. Challengers will also have their weight, measurements and digital photos taken at each workout so they can track their progress. They will also record a short video journal explaining their goals.

For those interested in a full membership, they first need to take a series of foundation classes that cost $150. After that, the unlimited monthly membership fee is $125 for as many classes as a person would like to take. They also have a “newbie” package for $200 that covers the foundation classes and a one-month membership. Kids’ memberships are $65 a month.

The couple will be hosting a one-time Women’s Street Survival workshop on March 28 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $55 and is open to women of all ages, though it is limited to 30 participants.
