Gates were installed at the cave entrances of Pinnacles National
Monument.

The caves were closed soon after rock slides were discovered

A missing Army helicopter was located a mile south of Pacheco Pass with all four on board dead.

“The message (of the find) was radioed in to Hollister where the Army had established a search command post … Spotting the plane brought to an end the greatest air/ground search ever centered in Hollister.”

A knife fight between a Hollister man and two Salinas men “marked a busy time for the law.” One Salinas man suffered a “quarter inch slash on his right chest.”

In other crime news James A. Smith, a Salinas High School fan who attended a game between the Balers and the Cowboys, emerged from the contest “and found his ’58 sedan completely painted yellow.”

The completion of the 101 San Juan Bautista interchange was delayed due to a lack of materials.

“The $360,000 interchange … is temporarily delayed,” said Resident Engineer Frank Avilla who noted that a completion date of May 1, 1959 was tentative because of uncertain weather.

“A 50-foot sign across the roadway will forever mark the way to Hollister and San Juan Bautista in the accepted highway fashion,” said Avilla.

100 years ago

A horrific earthquake felt in Italy on Dec. 28, 1908, which was responsible for at least 150,000 deaths was responded to by Hollister citizens.

“The city of Hollister have proven their sympathy for the suffering people of Italy by subscribing in excess of $150 in the past week to relieve the suffering in that unfortunate country,” reads a news article from Jan. 15, 1909. The list of those who made donations included The Bank of Hollister, $25; L. Flynn, $2.50; A. Breen, $2.50; McCloskey, $2.50; J. Machado, $1.00; R. Pacheco, $1.00; R. Hardin, $1.00; and J. O’Connell, $2.50.”

The local news section of the same edition, containing items of local interest as well as small advertisements, sheds light on the people and happenings a century ago.
