Former San Benito High School Director of Educational Services MaryAnn Boylan will join the Gilroy High School staff as an assistant principal.

“Because she brings a lot of experience, she exudes confidence and support. There’s a calmness about her,” said Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, Linda Piceno. “She really just cares about students.”

Boylan began her career in education in the late 1970s, and has remained in the field since, with stints in the Porterville Unified School District where she worked as the head guidance counselor for a number of years. She has taught middle and high school, and served as the principal at two schools in the same area.

She joins fellow assistant principals Greg Camacho– Light and Kat Hannah, replacing Mani Corzo.

At his request, Corzo was moved to the position of Dean of Students at GHS.

“He felt he was stretched too thin,” Piceno said. Corzo wanted to focus his talents on student discipline and attendance. He is often the voice on the other end of the phone line contacting GHS parents when their child is missing from school. “He does an excellent job.”

With Corzo shifting positions, a slot opened at the high school.

Three panels consisting of three GHS teachers, one student, one parent, and Gilroy Unified School District administrators participated in the hiring process.

The process is similar to the one being used for the hiring of the new GHS principal, where the panels complete an oral questioning of the candidates and observe them in simulated response scenarios.

Two finalists then met with the executive team for a final round of interviews.

Due to her extensive resume as the head administrator at school sites and in district offices, Piceno was concerned Boylan might have issues being the assistant principal.

“I love kids. I really miss being with kids and making a difference,” Piceno said, quoting Boylan during the interview. “At this point in my career, I don’t need to be the principal – just as long as we’re helping kids.”

The answer was good enough for district officials.

The position is contracted for 210 days, and the salary schedule is from $79,119 to $94,545, and because of her experience, Boylan is at the fourth and top step of the pay scale, Piceno explained.
