Children whose families receive or are enrolled in the food stamps program, California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids, Kinship Guardianship Assistance, or food distribution on Indian reservations are automatically eligible for free meals, regardless of income. Families with a foster child may file a separate application where income is based on the “personal use” income of the children.
Applications and a letter explaining the program have been sent home to families, but are also available in the principal’s office of each school. Applications are accepted throughout the school year so families are encouraged to contact the school if a household member becomes unemployed or if the family size increases.
