During this week, the Hollister Animal Shelter, Animal Hospital of Hollister, Ausaymas Veterinary Clinic, The House Call Vet and the Hollister Veterinary Clinic are participating in the annual Spay Day USA, according to the police department.

Spay Day is a national campaign to help stamp out the country’s severe pet overpopulation problem. When you consider two unaltered cats and their offspring can produce 420,000 cats, and the same combination of dogs can produce 67,000 canines in just six years, there is no reason not to spay or neuter, the press release points out.

These numbers cost cities and counties thousands of dollars each year, and more than five million animals are euthanized in the United States alone, according to the statement.

The animal shelter has teamed up with those organizations to offer free spay and neuter certificates starting this week. These certificates are limited, so do not hesitate, the statement reads.

To obtain free certificates, stop by the Hollister Animal Shelter, 1331 South St., between noon and 5 p.m. until Friday. For more information, call the animal shelter at (831) 636-4320.
