Honoring builders of the community
Leadership Morgan Hill is honoring a diverse group of local leaders in September at an event that will celebrate the diversity of Morgan Hill and the diversity of leadership traits these late leaders presented.
The certificates of achievement will be presented posthumously to their descendants during the Leadership Excellence Awards on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006 at The Fountain Oaks. This year’s event will commemorate Morgan Hill’s centennial, and honor the leaders who laid the foundation for the community Morgan Hill has become.
“For the past three years, the Leadership Morgan Hill Leadership Excellence Award has recognized an individual or individuals whose vision and leadership advance the spirit of community and charity, reflect courage and insight and inspire others to lead,” said Steve Tate, president of Leadership Morgan Hill. “This year, to honor our city as it observes its 100 th anniversary, we will instead present certificates of achievement for our “Century of Leadership Excellence” honorees.
The list of honorees includes Hiram Morgan Hill, Diana Murphy Hill, Catherine Murphy Dunne, Sada Coe, Isola Kennedy, Leonard Coates, A. S. Votaw, Lloyd Skeels, Harold Ward, Helen Ward, John Telfer, Emilio Gugliemo, Minnie Kell, Rudolf Hencken, Jere Shelton, Jan Smith John Moreno.
The event will be an afternoon on the mansion lawn and garden at The Fountain Oaks, the Chiala family estate in Morgan Hill. The Fountain Oaks was built in 1928 by Eastman Kodak heiress, Gertrude Achilles. Honorary Chair for the celebration is George Chiala and the Event Chair is Carol Spence Carr.
“The theme of the event will be the Gatsby ’20s,” Carr said. “So costumes, garden dresses, hats and parasols are encouraged and welcome.”
There will be a silent auction, food, beer and wine stations, live music and a Vintage Car display as well as a recognition program. Tickets for the event are $85.00 per person. Information regarding tickets, please call 408-778-7211 and sponsorship information can be obtained from 408-779-4189.
Leadership Morgan Hill is a training and development program created to inspire future leaders to community service. The nine-month program provides participants with in-depth knowledge of the local political, economic and government structures of the community. The program enjoys the support and participation of many current top-level community leaders, whose skills and decisions are shaping the city now and in the future. By interacting with these current leaders, program participants have the opportunity to learn new skills and develop a deeper understanding of critical issues such as crime, economic development, education and human services.
