Gilroy – The Gavilan College Board of Trustees voted unanimously Tuesday to begin studying a site for a potential new campus in Coyote Valley.

The land under consideration is located southwest of Bailey Avenue and Santa Teresa Boulevard in San Jose. Coyote Valley, San Jose’s proposed 7,000-acre development, is Gavilan’s northern most service area. The development of Coyote Valley would increase the number of total residents served by Gavilan from approximately 150,000 to 230,000.

The process of establishing a new site will take several years, including obtaining an environmental review and state approval.

A $108 million bond measure approved last year will provide funding for the study, as well as funding to acquire new land and expand facilities.

The vote to pass the resolution to begin the study was 5-0, with Trustee Laura Perry absent from the meeting.
