Students, parents, alumni, and community members have a lot of choices when it comes to staying in touch with Gavilan College. Frequent updates go out to college pages on Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter, and the sites are checked daily for incoming questions and comments. Alumni can also join a group on the professional site LinkedIn or the community on Classmates.com.

“This is a great way to get the word out quickly, and to get feedback in return. So many people are on social networking sites that it just makes sense to let them communicate with Gavilan College while they’re there,” said Jan Bernstein Chargin, Gavilan’s director of public information, who manages the sites.

Bernstein Chargin has been quietly building a social media presence for the past year, but hasn’t promoted the sites widely. Even so, the Facebook page has 174 fans, and the MySpace page has more than 100 friends.

“Now it’s time to invite more people to connect,” she said.
