At the May meeting, Gavilan College trustees unanimously approved the appointments of two new vice presidents.
According to the announcement from the college:
Frederick E. Harris was named to the position of Vice President of Administrative Services. Kathleen Moberg will become the Vice President of Student Services.
“I am pleased to be able to add two exceptional and experienced administrators to the management team at Gavilan College” said Gavilan College President Steve Kinsella. “Fred Harris is known throughout the state for his leadership on facilities and fiscal accountability related matters for the state’s system of community colleges. Kathleen Moberg is outstanding student services executive who will provide immediate assistance to our students through her extensive knowledge and her innovative approaches to find solutions to common challenges faced by students.”
Fred has most recently served as Assistant Vice Chancellor of College Finance and Facilities Planning in the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office. In that capacity he led a team responsible for monitoring all 72 community college districts’ financial condition. Prior to that role, he led the Facilities Planning and Utilization Unit at the Chancellor’s Office, the unit responsible for the allocation of state funds for community college facilities. His projects included the development of the FUSION system, which is a web-based suite of tools to support integrated management and reporting for the community college system’s facilities. Fred has also been a driving force in the creation and ongoing success of the system’s collaborative “energy efficiency” partnership with the state’s four Investor Owned Utilities. Prior to his tenure at the Chancellor’s Office, Fred was Lead Consultant of the California Senate Budget Subcommittee on Resources, Corrections, Justice, the Environment and Agriculture. In that role, he advised legislators on fiscal matters involving the support, local assistance and capital outlay expenditures of 35 state agencies. Born and raised in Sacramento, Fred studied at Sacramento City College, California State University Sacramento, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Raymond College at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California.
Kathleen Moberg comes to Gavilan from De Anza College where she has served as Dean of Admissions and Records, Assessment, and Veterans Services. While at De Anza she also provided oversight for outreach and recruitment and community relations, and served on a variety of district-wide committees, including collective bargaining, Basic Skills, Student Judicial Affairs, Planning and Budget, and the Student Success and Support Program task force. Prior to coming to De Anza, Kathleen was the Director of Admissions at Evergreen Valley College, where in addition to the responsibilities highlighted above, she oversaw International Student enrollment and athletic eligibility. She also taught English at Cabrillo College for eleven years. Kathleen was a community college student herself and the first in her family to earn a college degree, and is committed to the community college mission of access and student-centered education. Kathleen has a BA in English and a MA in Literature, both from San Jose State University.
Fred Harris will begin work in the middle of June, Kathleen Moberg will start on August 4th
