Firework dispensaries selling “safe and sane” fireworks have popped up around Hollister in preparation for the Fourth of July.

The tents were open starting at noon today and will run to July 6.

The dispensaries will help benefit nonprofits in the county such as Baler football and band boosters. In all, there will be 12 stands throughout the city.

Along with Hollister, fireworks stands will be in other areas such as San Juan Bautista. Fireworks will be sold in San Juan Bautista but are illegal to be used there.

The stands will sell only “safe and sane” fireworks, and any deemed dangerous will be banned, according to a press release sent by the Monterey County Fire and Arson Task Force. Dangerous fireworks include those that explode, rise into the air and contain poisonous chemicals.

“Safe and sane” fireworks are approved by the State Fire Marshal’s Office but are still considered to be dangerous. In Hollister, nobody under age 16 is permitted to handle the fireworks.

Other safety tips include using fireworks under supervision, and never setting off a firework near or on a dry grass area.

Hollister Fire Chief Fred Cheshire warned that all directions for the fireworks should be read carefully.

“Those that are legal should never leave the ground,” he said.

Cheshire urges those who see someone using illegal fireworks to call the fire department at 636-4327. If it is an emergency call 911.

The fire department will have one patrol out to catch those who are using illegal fireworks, Cheshire said. That is fewer patrols than previous years.

“That’s about all we can afford right now,” he said.
