The San Benito High School Baler Gifted Games kicked off last week with the special need students doing an obstacle course, running the 100 meters and mile and competing in the long jump, said Ramona Trevino, teacher of the severely disabled class at San Benito High School.
“They had such a cool time with the obstacle course,” Trevino said.
Trevino said on Monday and Wednesday, four classes came out and supported the kids. On Friday, about 40 students and parents came out to support the ‘Baler Gifted Games participants.
Trevino said some of the students in the stands competed with our kids. This year, there was no softball toss, water balloon toss or balloon fight, said Dave Tari, San Benito High School health teacher and athletic director.
Trevino said she likes the promotion of the healthy lifestyle they receive from the games. They watch what they eat at home and look at the calories, she said. Trevino said she has had one student lose six pounds and another student lose four pounds.
“They know they need to exercise to stay healthy,” she said.
Trevino said the kids’ self-esteem and character are built up because they get to participate in the games.
“They loving working with Dave’s class,” Trevino said. “Those are good mentors for them.”
Wednesday is the closing ceremony where participants will be receiving pins. Trevino said she thought pins would be easier than medals.
Trevino said this year the Life Skills fundraisers included a certain percentage of sales from PaPa Murphy’s Pizza and Baskin Robbins, selling of raffle tickets and sending out letters with the kids’ picture asking for help.
