Gilroy voters indicated approval in the direction of the Unified School District by approving $69 in bonds and returning to office the two incumbents running for reelection.

After failing to approve a bond measure in March, school supporters came up with what the community apparently felt was an improved version – and voters agreed. It was the culmination of more than a year of effort by a group of dedicated people who believe Gilroy’s schools must improve both physically and academically if the town is to thrive.

Voters apparently decided that without top-notch schools, the city council’s desire for industrial and high-tech development would flounder.

With an aggressive superintendent, an involved board of trustees and a mission to improve students’ work environment, Gilroy citizens can now begin to expect excellence from their schools.

Communities and neighborhoods are judged by the quality of local education. It’s one reason Palo Alto is so pricey. People have actually walked door-to-door and blanketed neighborhoods with fliers hoping to buy a home in the best school districts.

Every community should be so lucky. Let’s hope Gilroy is too.
