New houses are coming to Hollister, decked out with sugar and candies on their edible walls.

The Downtown Hollister Association, DMB, and the Hollister Chamber of Commerce are co-sponsors of the Second Annual Gingerbread contest Dec. 9.

Many of the homes will be on display at local businesses after the contest. Locals can look for them at Pennywise Drug Store, Kelly’s Gift Place, Main Street Bistro, the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce, the Hollister Free Lance and Muenzer’s until Dec. 20.

The organizers of the contest hope people will take time to visit local businesses before the judging Dec. 9.

Some past winners make up the roster of judges, including Sharlene Van Rooy. Van Rooy won first place last year in the family category for her rendition of the Hollister United Methodist Church.

“I go there for quilt guild meetings and thought it would be challenging,” she said of her choice to model the church.

She didn’t have time to make her own house this year, but she will be judging and looking for creativity in entries.

Mary Beth Cochran, the office manager for Drs. Cochran and Darnell, is baking the office entry for this year. The office won second place last year in the general category.

“Everyone on staff who wants to help can, with the doctors adding the finishing touches,” Cochran said.

The office has been preparing for more than three weeks, she said.

“I saw a recipe for snow on Home and Garden TV that uses coconut and granulated sugar in a food processor,” Cochran said. “It makes it fine like real snow. This year our snow will be better.”
