Smoke filled the air and a steady “thud, thud, thud” echo’s through the hills as choppers shuttled water up Murphy Canyon on Saturday.

As the fire was contained and reduced to scattered hotspots, Curt and Susan Sechrist were counting their blessings and making sure emergency workers know they’re appreciated.

God Bless Firefighters, said a banner spray-painted on a sheet. The couple tied it up in front of their cabin Saturday, then embraced.

“It’s been a pretty stressful week,” said Curt Sechrist.

Like many other inhabitants of the Croy Canyon area, the couple makes their home in a turn-of-the-century cabin remodeled to current standards. They spent much of the past 5½ years rebuilding the mountainside retreat that is home.

“It would have been a heartbreak to have to start over,” said Sechrist.

The sign is to show appreciation to the ones who saved the couple from heartbreak.

In a dusty clearing across the road, two firefighters in a California Department of Forestry fire engine watched the sign go up.

“It feels good,” said CDF firefighter Peter Moffett, between bites of a sandwich. But there are a lot of other firefighters, Moffett added, humbily, “not just me.”
