The next thing you do – get it to feel right
There are things I see most amateurs do after a bad shot that I
never see professionals and scratch golfers do.
Before I explain what it is, keep in mind that all golfers hit
bad shots but it is what they do after that makes a difference when
they play or practice. Believe me, each level play does it their
way almost 100% of the time. Here it is.

There are things I see most amateurs do after a bad shot that I never see professionals and scratch golfers do.

Before I explain what it is, keep in mind that all golfers hit bad shots but it is what they do after that makes a difference when they play or practice. Believe me, each level play does it their way almost 100% of the time. Here it is.

When I am teaching a high handicapper and they hit a bad shot what is the next thing they do? They put down another ball and try to ‘fix’ their bad swing as they hit another ball. What does the professional or scratch player do after a bad swing? They step back and make swings until they feel what they want it to feel like. Then they step up to a ball and swing. After that they evaluate the swing.

When my high handicappers step up to a ball after a bad swing I tell them the same thing. It is like trying to fix a flat tire when your car is moving. It won’t work. After a bad shot and before the next one take some swings until their swing feels like they need it to. Then take your next shot.

When you watch a PGA Tour event pay attention to what they do after a ‘bad’ shot. They step back and swing until it feels right. This way the next time they pull that same club out of the bag all they remember was making a good swing with it. It’s not hard to do. Play well.
