Difficult, windy conditions at the Eagle Ridge Golf Course on Wednesday kept scores higher than normal at the fourth Tri-County Athletic League Tournament in Gilroy, where Palma earned the top spot with a 214 and San Benito finished runner-up with a 218.
The two teams have finished in first and second place, respectively, in the TCAL the last two years, but Wednesday’s front-nine 36 at Eagle Ridge kept the door slightly ajar for the Balers.
“They had a chance,” San Benito head coach Chris Branon said. “That was a good chance to get [Palma].”
San Benito’s Will Cross and Palma’s Matt Pinizzotto each medaled the round with a 2-over 38.
Gilroy took advantage of its home course when it finished third at the TCAL Tournament with a 240, while Salinas was fourth with a 242. Everett Alvarez (275), Alisal (282) and North Salinas (297) rounded out the bottom three.
“But it was windy and for many of them, they probably haven’t seen that golf course before,” Branon added. “There are some intimidating shots on that course.”
Taylor Weatherly was second on San Benito with a 42.
Said Branon, “He’s been very consistent all year.”
Nathan Winn carded a 43, Darren Hopkins shot a 47 and Dalton Destefanis rounded out San Benito with a 48.
Jade Kimura shot a 51.
San Benito will now compete in the 18-hole Atwater Tournament at Stevinson Ranch Golf Club on Monday.
