San Benito finished third in a windy league match at Laguna Seca on Wednesday with a score of 216, behind Palma’s 196 and Gilroy’s 210.
On par 36 nine-hole round, Zach Zgragen led the Balers with a 39. He had two double bogeys early but then rebounded with a pair of birdies.
Chris Shackleton had a 42, Wesley Nelson had a 44, Dan Isaacson had a 45, Chase Graves had a 46 and Curtis Rhodes had a 47.
Coach Mark Tinder said his team was a little tired after playing its third match in three days.
The Balers were coming off of a third-place finish out of the 11 teams at Rancho Canada in the Monterey invitational. That is the same course where the CCS finals will be held.
Shackleton led the way with a 72 – one over par – and was fourth overall.
“He is hitting the driver very well,” Tinder said. “It is straight and long, when a player is hitting well, it gives him confidence and sets him up to hit good on the hole. He is hitting 270, but he is hitting it right down the middle.”
Zgragen shot a 76, Rhodes had a 79, Isaacson had an 83, Graves had an 84 and Derek Stone had an 85.
The low was Jason Simonitti from Salinas with a 68.
San Benito had a team score of 394. No. 1 was Salinas 375, No. 2 was Berkeley 388, Mountain View was fourth with a 397 and Saratoga came in fifth at 399.
“The performance was very good for our team because we played some excellent teams,” Tinder said. “We are making a late season charge. I am impressed with how the team is coming together. We have learned how to take a bogey and move on to the next hole. That is what hurt us earlier in the season.”
In the JV match at Laguna Seca, freshman Curtis Wahl led the way with a 48.
Jared Bouchard had a 55, Brandon Rianda had a 55, Dan Ziebron had a 56 and Steele Wilson III had a 58.
