My love story is about my valentine. In fact, this individual has been my special valentine for many years now. If you read my “The Flavor Chronicle” column or were a reader when I was writing “Mixed Grill,” you have already been introduced to her.
It may sound silly, but I do not remember meeting this individual – but I have heard the story recounted a time or two. The day I met my valentine for the first time, it was her birthday. As luck would have it, I met this special person when I was in the hospital, just hours old. My special valentine had to meet her first grandchild, which makes my valentine my Grandma Virginia. Ever since the day I was born as her special birthday present, I have become closer to her.
The love I feel from my grandma is so great and truly unconditional, it fills my heart and makes me feel like the luckiest person in the world. In my mind and in my heart, I was always grateful for all the love and special attention my grandma has shown me.
I would do just about anything for her. So, when it came time that she could not do as much for herself, I did not have to think twice about moving in with her. Since I have been living with my grandma for a number of years now, I feel like I am able to pay her back for all she has done for me.
Always wanting to help, my grandma says, “You do so much for me. I wish I could do more things to help you.” I reply, “You already have and continue to do more than you will ever know.”
Grandma has a few little trinkets around the house that say things like, “All Grandmas are made of gold, but mine glitters,” and “Grandmas are special, especially mine.” Both are very true. My sister and I are my grandma’s only grandchildren. We were never spoiled with gifts, but we were spoiled with her love. My sister and I are very blessed to have such a sweet and wonderful grandmother. Her love, wisdom and stories have guided us and will no doubt, be felt by many generations to come.
