Dear Editor,
I want to thank and congratulate our Board of Supervisors on the wise decision to begin a resolution opposing the Miwok Casino Project. I, along with the majority of San Benito County residents, am enormously grateful to them for their stand on this project.
Of course, now the investors will begin a heavy campaign to force an unwanted casino down our throats. The casino-promoters say that they are are interested in what we, the residents want, but we have already told them through surveys and petitions that what we want is no casino in San Benito County! They don’t care because this project will make them millions of dollars, and that’s what it’s really all about.
Why is it not good for the rest of us? Here are just a few reasons:
Our infrastructure cannot support a casino and all the costs associated with it. Studies have shown that a casino generates twice the costs to the county in which it resides than it brings in.
Our sheriff’s department will be hugely impacted and our crime rate will rise. Near Jackson Rancheria Casino, law enforcement agencies have reported that 27 percent of felonies are casino-related.
We need businesses that pay all state and local taxes and that operate according to state laws and regulations. Businesses that can be held accountable.
Our downtown is already struggling. Our downtown businesses will see a decrease in revenue because casino resorts are truly “destination locations,’ meaning they are meant to attract visitors and keep them there. They can provide a bus to downtown, but that doesn’t mean there will be anyone on it.
If allowed to happen, this project will degrade our county while lining the pockets of a few greedy individuals.
