San Benito County residents can recycle old automotive batteries at no charge during the eighth annual Great Battery Roundup, sponsored by AAA Northern California.

From April 17-24, AAA is partnering with dozens of towing contractors who will provide drop-off locations throughout the region. Members and the public are encouraged to bring any number of old vehicle or boat batteries for recycling to Tiffany Ford on Gateway Drive from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the roundup week.

“Each year, old batteries stored in homes and garages cause fires, chemical burns and lead poisoning injuring 7,000 Americans, many of them children,” said Cynthia Harris, spokeswoman for AAA Northern California. “Others are disposed of illegally in dumps or bodies of water, causing devastating pollution. By dropping off old vehicle batteries at one of AAA’s Battery Roundup locations, you are protecting both your home and family and our delicate environment.”

AAA turns batteries over to organizations that safely recycle their components and donates the proceeds, $2 per battery, to local nonprofit groups devoted to environmental preservation and education. This year AAA has partnered with 22 environmental nonprofits that will benefit from local donations.

Since 2001, AAA’s Great Battery Roundup has collected 41,366 batteries and donated $82,732 to local environmental charities.

AAA’s battery recycling efforts have also found safe, new uses for 744,588 pounds of lead, 124,098 pounds of plastic and 41,366 gallons of sulfuric acid and kept dangerous chemicals out of Californians’ garages and groundwater. If properly recycled, more than 99 percent of each battery can be reused to make new batteries.
