SAN JOSE – Anzar High’s Kiely White powered her 26th kill of the night to finish off No. 4 Redwood Christian 15-13, 13-15, 15-7, 15-6 in Thursday’s Central Coast Section Division V volleyball match at Archbiship Mitty High in San Jose.

It was not only the first CCS volleyball victory in Anzar history, it vaulted the Hawks into the Division V title game at West Valley College in Saratoga Saturday at 10 a.m.

“The girls have been working hard in practice and coming every day,” said Anzar coach Tamara Smith. “We’ve played well as a team all season. It was a team effort.”

“It’s amazing!” said the Hawks’ Casey Norton, who may have had her best match of the year with her effectiveness at the net. “We might even be going to NorCals.”

The Hawks, just to be sure, should do their best to chalk a victory on Saturday when the take on Thursday night’s winner between Valley Christian-Dublin and King’s Academy (Santa Clara) in the title match. Unlike the upper Divisions in CCS, the remaining two teams don’t automatically advance to NorCals.

An ace by Justine Wiley forged the Hawks to a 7-2 lead in game four. Norton’s kill brought 8-2, while a White dink worked just perfect for 9-2.

White thought a miscue on her faulty reverse overhead bump was a hoot. She was all business on a kill which got the Hawks sideout. Treva Crocker then squashed a freeball at the net. After the Eagles perked up with a few points for 12-5, Smith called timeout.

White made sure of sending the Hawks’ rally squad and fan base of about 30 home happy with three striaght kills to end the match.

“I want to play more,” said White. “I can’t wait til Saturday.”

Crocker said the Hawks were fired up for this one.

“We had so much adrenaline,” she said. “We were so psyched up. That’s why we played so well. We had a lot of spirit.”

Leanna Hardy had 14 digs and 15 service points for Anzar while Wiley had 17 digs. Setter Gena Ray had 36 assists. Stephanie Smith had two aces.

Should the Hawks win on Saturday, it would be their first team championship of any kind in school history, to say nothing of their first CCS team title.

Anzar has won two individual D-V titles in cross country.
