Following it’s 45-point drubbing in opening game of the Mission Trail Athletic League season, the Anzar Hawks never thought it would get any worse.

Tuesday evening it did.

The Santa Catalina Cougars dismantled the Hawks 95-26 in front a quiet Anzar crowd.

Three Cougars – Haddie Dowson, Coral Taylor and D’Mari Crenshaw – finished the game with double figures. Dowson lead the way with 25 points while Taylor pitched in 19 and Crenshaw added 14.

“We just came out aggressive and took the ball to the basket,” Dowson said afterward.

That’s an understatement.

In the first quarter, the Cougars held the Hawks to one basket on its way to a 23-2 finish. The Hawks’ lone basket came on an Amanda Link jumper midway through the quarter.

The Cougars did an excellent job of driving to the basket and making the easy lay-ups. The slow start killed the Hawks chances early, but the scrappy team fought back in the second quarter. Sort of.

On the offensive end of the floor crisper passes and a better shot selection enabled the Hawks to put up 13 points in the quarter.

Link hit two of her four field goals and the Hawks actually had the Cougars’ defense on its’ heels on a few possessions. The Hawks went on a mini 6-2 run and momentarily sparked its fans. Link finished the game with a team-high 10 points.

After every Hawks basket however, the Cougars quickly in-bounded the ball and sprinted down court, where Dowson and Taylor awaited. On one fastbreak following a Hawks make Dowson stroked a three-pointer.

The Cougars outscored the Hawks 23-13 in the second quarter and broke the game open in the third quarter with a 30-7 run. The Cougars improved to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the MTAL while the Hawks overall record fell to 1-5 and its MTAL record to 0-2.

Tonight at 6:30 p.m. the Hawks travel to Gonzales High School to battle the winless Spartans. Anzar can ail its defensive woes and put an end to its two-game losing streak this evening.
