The boys team heads up the trail at Gavilan College Thursday afternoon. Coach Doug MacKinnon said the "hilly" course at the Gilroy college is probably the toughest course the Hawks will run this season.

The Anzar Hawks cross country team swept both the boys and girls races at a dual meet at Gavilan College Thursday, both defeating Marina by comfortable scores.

The boys beat Marina 19-44, while the girls did the same, upending Marina 23-41.

Both Calvary Christian and Oakwood attended as well, but neither were able to field a full team.

“I think they did well for early in the season,” coach Doug MacKinnon said.

Running on a hilly course at Gavilan College, which was said to be just shy of three miles, the Hawks displayed their experience and depth on both the boys and girls sides.

The top five boys finished in the top six spots, while each of the girls placed within the top eight spots.

“And it’s probably the toughest course we run,” MacKinnon added. “We ran it twice in practice. I think we have it pretty dialed down.”

Christian Heath (16:43) finished first for the boys team and was first overall at the four-team dual meet. His teammates filed in behind him, with Armando Zepeda (17:48) taking third overall, Jacob Wilkenson (17:51) fourth, Izzy Parra (18:47) fifth, and Miguel Vega (18:58) finishing sixth overall.

On the girls side, Sabrina Gonzalez (23:18) led the Hawks, and like Heath, finished first overall for the meet. Naomi Frenzel (23:49) followed Gonzalez in second place, while Lauren Bellone (25:51) was fifth, Stacy Olguin (28:01) seventh, and Kelly Gomez (28:10) eighth to round out the Hawks.

Anzar will have a Mission Trial Athletic League/Coastal Athletic League Center Meet on Thursday, Sept. 25 at Salinas’ Toro Park at 4 p.m. Teams in attendance will include Oakwood, Marina, Calvary Christian, Pacific Collegiate, Santa Cruz Waldorf, York, Georgiana Bruce Kirby and Monterey Bay Academy.
