San Benito was unable to put a blemish on Gilroy’s perfect record Tuesday after losing all seven matches.

The closest the Balers could get to pulling off at least a set was in the No. 2 doubles spot, but Cathy Villarico and Jamie Houston eventually lost 5-7, 1-6 to Jackie Morrales and Anna Nuguyen.

“Overall everyone gave it their best effort and played as well as they could play,” said Haybaler coach Ed Cecena, whose team is 4-9 overall and 1-6 in league. “Gilroy is just a good team.”

No. 1 singles player Jill Merrigan lost 4-6, 3-6, but had a strong showing, Cecena said.

“She had pretty lose sets and was attacking the net more and putting pressure on her opponent,” Cecena said.

No. 2 Vanessa Martinez lost 2-6, 3-6; No. 3 Tiffany Davies lost 0-6, 3-6 and No. 4 Jessica Trudell was defeated 4-6, 0-6.

“Even though they beat us all four times, each singles player in (her) own way made an improvement from the last time,” Cecena said. “Jill scored three points last time, but she scored seven today. Vanessa won only one set last time. This time she won five although it was against a different opponent.”

The No. 1 doubles team of Becky Bonner and Mary Von Urff lost 2-6, 3-6. Von Urff, who normally goes at the No. 4 singles, was taking the place of the Mary Beth Miller. Miller was out sick for the match.

In the No. 3 doubles spot, Alyssa Penacho and Megan Kirk lost 3-6, 2-6.

“We had a few players out with illnesses and injuries,” Cecena said. “But that is OK because it gives younger players the chance to get match experience.”

San Benito will be at North Salinas on Thursday.

“We are pretty evenly matched up,” Cecena said. “We are capable of winning if we continue improving and playing up to our potential. Both North Salinas and Salinas are good matchups with us.”
