Santa Clara –– The Hollister Baseball Academy 16U team placed second in the Memorial Day tournament held at Mission College.
After losing its first game to the ABA of Monterey 12-0, Hollister rebounded to win its next three games, defeating the San Jose Lobos 10-0 and the San Jose Cobras 8-7.
In the seventh inning of the the third game, Anthony Bengivengo had a triple and was knocked in with a hit from Ryan McFall.
Hollister lost in the championship game against the ABA, 15-3.
Jacob Boyd went 5 for 9 with two doubles in the tournament, and Josh Garcia went 6 for 10 with a triple and five RBIs.
The HBA 16U team is playing in its first year, but its players are not rookies. Combined they have 98 years of baseball experience.
Most of the players have played together competitively during their young careers.
“All it takes is a little focus and a strong dedicated coaching staff to bring out the best in these players,” said coach Tim Canez. “They are learning to move out of the checkers game to the next level, which is a chess game.”
The team will be hosting numerous games in Hollister this summer as well as travelling throughout the area.
On Saturday, there will be a double header in Hollister, and on June 19, the team will be competing in a tournament at Elk Grove. On June 27, the HBA 16U team will be travelling to Porterville for a double header.
