A heat advisory is in effect today, as the mercury is expected to soar to 105 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The precautionary notice starts at noon and will last until 8 p.m., NWS forecaster Diana Henderson said. Local residents are warned to try to stay out of the heat, don’t leave their kids in the car and make sure pets have plenty of water.

By Wednesday, the temperature is expected to drop to 101. But the heat wave will be “short lived” as Friday’s forecasted high is 80, Henderson added. By this weekend highs will be about 72 degrees.

It will also be sunny today and Wednesday, with cloudy skies and fog returning by Friday.

For the rest of the summer, as far as forecasters are able to predict, the cooler pattern that the Bay Area has seen until now will return, Henderson said.

Today’s heat advisory is the first of the year, as the mercury hasn’t risen far above 90 degrees until this week, Henderson said.
