Hollister – Heavy rainfall forced the Bureau of Land Management to close the Clear Creek Management Area from Thursday at noon until Sunday at noon to protect the natural resources, roads and public safety, according to personnel.

Brian White, an employee at BLM’s Hollister Field Office, said thousands of people frequent the area on the weekends, but because of the rain they had no choice but to close the area.

Depending on the weather, the popular off-road vehicle area can be shut down once or twice a year, White said. But he didn’t know if the area had ever been closed on a big holiday weekend.

“We don’t want people from the Bay Area or anywhere else driving an hour or an hour and a half and finding it closed,” he said.

Signs and barricades will be placed to inform the public of the closure, but if someone is caught in the area they could be cited, White said.
