Grants available for Hollister nonprofits

Hollister’s helping hand organizations have a shot at a grant from the Community Development Block Grant program – as long as they meet the Dec. 1 deadline for applications.

The fund has $125,000 to dole out to nonprofit organizations that have been working in Hollister for at least two years, among other criteria. If the groups have established 501(c) 3 status, have an active board and active volunteers, they can apply for a grant in four areas.

The nonprofits that work with education and learning, self-reliant individuals and families, civic engagement or arts and culture are all eligible to apply for the 2006-2007 grants.

In the field of education, organizations can work in any field from early childhood education to adult continuing education. Those that focus on promoting self-reliance for individuals or families may help with housing or food, health and safety or other aspects that can enhance independence among community members. For civic engagement, groups are those who encourage people to participate in regional issues and problem solving. Arts and culture groups eligible include those that offer a variety of experiences, including visual or performing arts.

Organizations will have a chance to apply for a grant in the 2007-2008 fiscal year, as well, as the city anticipates an additional $125,000 for nonprofit grants next year.

For more information on eligibility and the grant application, please contact Jeff Pyle, the economic development manager, at 831-630-5103. Applications are due Fri., Dec. 1.
