Hollister – It’s Homecoming time again for San Benito High School. The celebrations for the longtime tradition began on Friday morning with two rallies at the high school, featuring dance squad and cheerleader performances as well as small floats designed by each class. This year’s theme was superheros and colorful banners depicting Spiderman, Batman, Superman and the Incredibles, decorated the school’s gym on Friday.

During the rally, finalists for king and queen were seated on thrones on the gym’s stage and basketball, football and soccer teams came out to wave to the crowd.

The rally was followed by three girls’ basketball games against Salinas’ Notre Dame, where freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams played and where the Homecoming king, Kyle Sharp, was crowned. Afterwards, students attended a casual dress dance at the school, where the queen, Jennifer Anaya, was selected.

Attendance at rallies are required at the high school and some students say they are important for not only building school spirit, but catching up on what’s new around campus.

“When I was a freshman I used to leave, but now I go because it’s a chance to see my friends and find out what’s going on at the school,” said Spencer Gonzales, 17, and a senior at the school.

Paige Gardner, the senior class president, said she considered the weekend off to a good start. Gardner showed off small floats made by individual classes – mostly small carts decorated to fit the superhero theme – as cheerleaders performed for students crowded in the bleachers. The senior also said her role in organizing the rally taught her many things.

“It taught me to start early, be creative and make sure you have people helping you,” said Gardner.
