Hollister – Highway 25 commuters will likely experience slight delays today resulting from work crews starting a $448,000 resurfacing project.
Crews will resurface multiple sections of a 26-mile stretch of Highway 25 from the Monterey County line to 5 miles south of the Highway 25/146 intersection east of Pinnacles National Monument, said Susana Cruz, a Department of Transportation spokeswoman.
Cruz said the two-lane highway will remain open during the month-long project, but one-way reverse traffic control will be in effect. That means traffic one direction will be stopped by a flagger while traffic from the other direction crosses the temporary one-way sections being resurfaced. Delays are expected to be 5 minutes or less, Cruz said, because only small sections of the Highway will be resurfaced at a time. The estimated delays were based on information gathered from traffic counts.
The project is scheduled to be finished before school starts at Bitterwater-Tully and will not delay traffic to and from the school.
The resurfacing is likely to delay visitors to the Pinnacles National Monument approaching from the south said Carl Brenner, a park research supervisor.
“I hope delays will be shorter than the last Highway 25 project,” Brenner said.
The contractor, Granite Construction, will work with Caltrans from 7am to 7pm and should finish the project by mid-August, Cruz said. Granite Construction is one the nation’s largest heavy civil contractors.
Cruz said resurfacing will improve road conditions in sections of Highway 25, which have been degraded by regular daily traffic. Cruz said smooth, even surfaces help prevent alignment problems and other car trouble.
“A lot of this damage is caused by heavy trucks,” Cruz said. “Resurfacing will benefit daily drivers.”
