Our first Red Phone caller, a local man, asked the Crimson Crusader if the city planned to repave Hillcrest Road in Hollister any time soon. The Crimson Crusader consulted the Magic 8-Ball on this question.
The answer: “Outlook not so good.” Duly noted. But since the Magic 8-Ball is a simple toy manufactured by Mattel, the Crimson Crusader thought it wise to also check with a real expert.
Our hero made a quick call over to David Rubcic, the city of Hollister’s associate civil engineer, to find out for sure. Rubcic said work on Hillcrest Road and Meridian Street had been removed from current road projects after the Highway 25 bypass project got a green light to move forward.
He said improvement work on both Hillcrest and Meridian would be delayed until the bypass is completed. Since the bypass isn’t scheduled to be completed until the end of the 2008, dearest caller, it could be a while.
That being said, Rubcic pointed out that some minor, remedial work could be done to the thoroughfares between now and then. However, none of that minor work Rubcic spoke of has been planned or paid for yet and is not guaranteed.
Not the Batphone
Our next Red Phone question came from a young Hollister lad who asked the Crimson Crusader if the Red Phone was similar to the Batphone used by the superhero Batman. The answer: No.
The Batphone was used by Gotham Police Commissioner James Worthington “Jim” Gordon to call Batman. The Red Phone is a dedicated line that allows everyone to contact the Crimson Crusader. Another difference is that the subject matter of Red Phone calls usually involve the fate of Hollister, not Gotham.
Speaking of the Red Phone, our hero would also like to remind callers to speak loud and clear when leaving a message for the Crimson Crusader. Our hero possesses many amazing traits, but super-sensitive hearing isn’t one of them.
Rally Parking Question
Our next Red Phone question came from a free-thinking Hollister woman who asked the Crimson Crusader why the city doesn’t operate the Briggs Building parking lot during the annual Fourth of July rally and charge visiting motorcyclists to park there.
The Crimson Crusader turned to Hollister City Manager Clint Quilter to get the answer. He said the Briggs Building is used by police during the rally. Hollister Police Capt. Bob Brooks said the Briggs parking structure is filled with emergency vehicles and police cars during the rally.
And since the Briggs Building is the police headquarters during the busy weekend, officers are allowed to park in the facility, he said.
