The Hollister Independence Rally Committee is helping to give gifts to children in need with its first Giving Tree program.

Residents interested in giving a gift to a child in need can come to the HIRC office on Fifth Street between San Benito and Monterey streets and pick an ornament made by a child from the Christmas tree.

Each ornament has the child’s name, age and gender, and the donor will buy a present for the child and return it, along with ornament, to the HIRC office.

“It’s a great way to give during the holidays,” said HIRC Executive Director Ellen Brown. “With the economy the way it is, we can assume there are more needy people out in the county. It’s great to get people in the office and give back all at once.”

Names of the children were provided by Hillside Christian Fellowship, which will hold a gift-giving celebration in mid-December.

The Giving Tree program will begin Saturday at the annual Lights On Celebration. For more information, call the HIRC office at 634-8231.
