The San Benito County Historical Society and the National Civil War Association will be presenting a living history event at the Historical Park in Tres Pinos Sept. 18 and 20.

The Historical Park has been the site of civil war reenactments in the past, but this event will invite visitors to play an active role in the events. For two days, the buildings at the Historical Park will be transformed into a town from 1863, according to Teresa Thompson, one of the event coordinators.

The main attraction will be boarding house that will be complete with furnishings from 1863, from the carpet to pictures to the drapes. The boarding house operator will bring in china, silverware and crystal from the era. She will dress in period clothes and cook food from the era, as well.

A saloon will be set up where visitors can learn card games from the era and drink ice-cold sassparilla.

“This event is unique since we will be asking the public to participate, not just walk through the park and get a lecture,” Thompson said, in a press release. “We are asking people to immerse themselves into living history.”

The park will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and the key events will include a wedding, a jury trial and a shooting. The park will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, and the key events will include a sermon from a preacher and an old-fashioned Sunday picnic with fried chicken.

Union officers will be in the town, as well, and there may be some spying between the officers and Confederate sympathizers.

Admission is free and parking is $3 per car.
