Hollister – Hollister residents are about to start paying more for their garbage service.

The City Council approved a 7 percent rate increase at its meeting Monday. The city’s contract with Hollister Disposal requires rates to increase every year to meet rising costs, but councilmembers postponed the fee hike when it first came up in March.

Mayor Brad Pike said an April 9 study session, during which the disposal company went over its expenses, helped address his concerns.

“It’s tough to continue to increase fees,” he said. “But the reality of it is that we’ve got to be able to provide those services.”

The increase will amount to around $1 per month for residents with a 35-gallon trash can. City Manager Clint Quilter said the increase will take effect immediately.

Pike noted that the disposal company also agreed to waive any further increases until Hollister – working with San Benito County and the City of San Juan Bautista – transitions to a new waste management contract in summer 2008.

“I felt like both parties won,” Pike said. “It was a fair deal.”
