A 23-year-old Hollister man was stabbed and beaten with a baseball bat outside 7-Eleven on Monday night, but survived and remains in stable condition, according to police.

Police described how a Hispanic male first approached the man around 11 p.m. outside the store on the 900 block of San Benito Street and asked what he “claimed,” referring to a potential gang affiliation. The suspect then whistled over four or five men to assist him in assaulting the victim, according to a press release from the Hollister Police Department.

They beat the victim with their fists, but were scared away by passing motorists who honked their horns, acording to police. The victim then began walking on Hawkins Street. Near the intersection of East Street, the same group again assaulted the man with a baseball bat while stabbing him multiple times, according to police.

The victim was airlifted to a Bay Area hospital and is listed in stable condition, police reported.

The suspects are described as four or five Hispanic males, all in their late teens to early 20s. They were last seen driving a red vehicle, possibly with four doors, according to police.
